Putting on lipstick, eating, reading a book, playing cards, changing clothes are all things we may have seen or heard about that was done while driving. Yes, texting is a big problem but alarmed by reports of irresponsible driving, Denmark-based GN Netcom recently commissioned a survey to take an in-depth look at just what folks might be doing while they're behind the wheel.
GN Netcom markets its Jabra brand of hands-free headsets and in-car speakerphone systems worldwide. They conducted an online survey and discovered that despite technology -- such as hands-free communication devices designed to help keep both hands on the wheel -- people are choosing to use their hands elsewhere while driving.
Seat belts, airbags, hands-free driving laws and devices – they’re all designed for the benefit of a responsible driver. However, it seems we are often anything but responsible on the roads. To compound issues, only about half of the survey respondents reported they’re using a hands-free device while talking, which is the law in many regions.
The results show:
• The majority of respondents (72%) admitted to eating food regularly while driving
• 29% of respondents admitted to kissing others while driving, whereas a smaller, but surprising number (15%) said they’ve performed sex or other sexual acts while driving
• 28% confirmed they text while driving
• 25% admitted to changing clothes while driving, whereas much fewer (5%) have shaved while behind the wheel
• Nearly 25 % admits to styling their hair or changing clothes while the car is in motion
• 13% reported they apply makeup while driving
• 10% also reported reading newspapers or magazines while driving
• 5% confessed to playing video games, while even more (12%) admitted to writing or reading emails while drivingThe key is to be prepared. Whenever going somewhere make sure you have a plan on what you will do while driving to pass the time and what you will do when your cell phone rings. Planning is the battle. Once you do start driving keep in mind that safety and driving is most important. It may seem no big deal until something major happens and you have to think and react quick. As everyone knows it isn't always how safe you drive but how safe others drive.
So it is also looking out for the unexpected. This prevents more accidents than one can realize. How many close calls have you run into in the last week? remember it only takes less than a second to miss an accident or cause one. Make sure that fraction of a second isn't being spent on something statistical as in this survey or you may end up being the statistic.

Fourth member of an alleged Ottawa terror cell was taken into custody Friday as authorities continued to dismantle what they say is a plot that reached all the way from the nation's capital to the battlefields of Afghanistan and beyond. But the person has not yet been charged and the RCMP will not release any names.
The Mounties confirmed this latest arrest is part of an investigation that began last September known as ''Project Samossa." So far three other men have been arrested on terrorism-related charges as part of the probe.
Menard wouldn't say if or when charges might be laid against the latest person arrested, or when that person could appear in court. Rumours of another arrest began swirling Friday morning as the third suspect to face terrorism-related charges appeared in court following a year-long investigation by police and security services.
Khurram Syed Sher, 28, of London, Ont., is charged with conspiracy to facilitate terrorist activity in the case in which police say they seized more than 50 circuit boards designed to remotely detonate bombs.
Sher is a McGill University graduate and an anatomical pathologist at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital in St. Thomas, Ont., just south of London. The bearded father of three and avid hockey player appeared nervous during the brief court appearance, where a justice of the peace ordered him to return Sept. 1 via video feed.
Sher wore a striped dress shirt and dark trousers. He has dark hair and his thick, black beard is neatly trimmed to a point at his jawline. Sher clasped his hands in front of him as his eyes darted across the courtroom. At one point he spoke quietly with his lawyer, Anser Farooq. Farooq later told reporters his client had just been flown to Ottawa on an RCMP aircraft and was anxious to return to his family.
"He's okay. I mean, he's just been brought over, separated from his family,'' Farooq said. "We're hoping to address the main concern, which is getting into the court and hear the concerns the Crown has, and get him back to his family as soon as possible.''
Sher is shown in an online video auditioning for TV's ``Canadian Idol'' in Montreal two years ago, moonwalking, doing the robot dance and singing a deliberately woeful version of Avril Lavigne's "Complicated.''
Farooq said he had seen the video, quipping "I don't know if he wants to try again.'' The others charged are Hiva Mohammad Alizadeh, 30, and Misbahuddin Ahmed, 26, both of Ottawa. They appeared in court on Thursday.
The charges say the conspiracy was carried out in Ottawa, Iran, Afghanistan, Dubai and Pakistan. Police say an attack was likely still months away when they pounced on the plot, but they moved because they feared the men were about to start sending money to other terrorists in Afghanistan.
Besides the arrests, police seized circuit boards, terrorist literature and bomb-related documents. All those arrested are Canadian citizens. Ahmed is an X-ray technician at an Ottawa hospital. Alizadeh studied English as an additional language and electrical engineering technology at Red River College in Winnipeg.
The Mounties described the three as members of a home-grown terrorist group, although they said Alizadeh is a member of another terror group with links to the Afghan war.
He is also charged with making or having ``an explosive substance'' with the intent to endanger life or cause serious damage to property. Police said the circuit boards are considered an explosive substance under the Criminal Code.
The additional alleged conspirators named in the court documents are James Lara, Rizgar Alizadeh and Zakaria Mamosta. It is not clear where these men are. The charges say the conspiracy was carried out in Ottawa, Iran, Afghanistan, Dubai and Pakistan. Ahmed recently told family members he wanted to move to Saudi Arabia, sources said.
The investigation, known as ''Project Samossa,'' continues, with the Mounties refusing to provide anything but bare-bones details of the case. Connections among the three charged, their motives, their targets and whether they are linked to either the Taliban or al-Qaida will have to come out in court.
"This group posed a real and serious threat to the citizens of the National Capital Region and Canada's national security,'' RCMP Chief Supt. Serge Therriault told a news conference Thursday. He also said the plot went beyond the capital.
''Anywhere where these individuals would travel would be a concern of mine,'' he said. ''It wouldn't be limited to Ottawa.'' He said investigators seized ''schematics, videos, drawings, instructions, books and electrical components designed specifically for the construction of improvised explosive devices or IEDs."

Like coaxing a genie out of a bottle, our granddaughter summons us out of the computer.
Two-year-old Loulou lives in France, but she knows she can see us, with a little help from her parents, if she goes to the computer and calls out, “Nana, DanDan [granddad].”
The built-in web cameras in both our computers let us be part of her daily life, watching her play and flip through books and hearing her chatter in French and English. And it is as interactive as a video game: Loulou and I have played duets on twin ukuleles, taken turns “smelling” her rock collection and played pat-a-cake.
Our family communicates once or twice a week with the webcam, using the MSNLive Messenger program. Our computer came with a built-in camera; all we needed to do was download the program, create an e-mail account and we were off. Many people also use Skype, an alternate program so popular that it is fast becoming a verb — as in, “Have you Skyped today?”
Grandparents quickly become webcam junkies. Kathy Brewer, who lives in a St. Paul suburb, first saw her grandson, Finn, who lives in Portland, Ore., three years ago via video camera. He was just hours old and crying. She crooned a wordless lullaby to him.
“He stopped crying and appeared to listen,” Brewer said. “We would not have the same kind of close relationship with him if it were not for Skype.” Although they don’t use the video cam as often as they once did, Brewer and her husband watched as Finn unwrapped presents on his second birthday.
