HAVANA – What would you do if your entire city was taken over by flesh-eating zombies and communist leaders insisted it was nothing but a plot by U.S-backed dissidents to destabilize the government? If you were the protagonist of Juan de los Muertos — "Juan of the Dead" — the first zombie flick ever shot in post-revolutionary Cuba, you'd figure out how to make some cash out of the carnage.
Part horror show, part social satire, the soon-to-be-shot movie has the backing of a Spanish production company, a green light from Cuban authorities and a budget that dwarfs most big-screen offerings from the island.
And its irreverent humor — one blurb for the film proclaims: "Fifty years later, a new Revolution has begun" — could make Juan of the Dead the next big thing in Cuban cinema, and give it a real chance at global success.
It is the second film by 34-year-old writer-director Alejandro Brugues, who says his idea was to tell a story that was authentically Cuban — but within the logic of a camp zombie flick. Closest to his heart, he said, is a quintessential island knack for making ends meet, whether by keeping a rusty '57 Chevy on the road for half a century, or finding a way to feed a family on a salary of $20 a month.
"We Cubans have had to deal with a whole series of problems in the last 50 years," Brugues told The Associated Press, an allusion to the decades of economic hardship and isolation that have followed Fidel Castro's 1959 revolution, particularly since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
As Brugues spoke, makeup artists in another room were transforming actors into blood-soaked zombies, a process that can take up to five hours. A gruesome zombie head lay on a table alongside multiple cups of coffee and cigarette butts, and a producer was testing out the believability of a detached, latex hand by sneaking up on unsuspecting production assistants and tapping them on the shoulder with it.
The movie's plot is simple: A 40-year old layabout named Juan finds a zombie floating in the water while fishing off the coast of Havana. The zombie attacks but Juan makes a narrow escape, only to find that the undead are all over the city. State-run media blames the whole thing on government opponents backed by Cuba's archenemies in Washington, but Juan knows better — and comes up with a plan.
Together with his sidekick, Lazaro — described by the filmmakers as "just as lazy, but twice as stupid" — Juan puts out the word that he is open for business. Has your grandmother been turned into a zombie? Is your uncle stumbling about with blood coming out of his mouth?
Juan and Lazaro promise to get rid of your undead loved ones for just 15 Cuban convertible pesos ($16) a pop, and to clean up the mess for an extra 20 ($21). The duo are making good money until they find themselves the only non-zombies left in the city, with the rest of the population having either fled or been infected.
It has a budget of $2.1 million, most of which is going to special effects that have to be added in Spain because the technology is not available in Cuba. "Clearly, it is a very small budget for an international zombie movie," said Claudia Calvino, the film's 27-year-old Cuban co-producer. "But that's a lot of money for a Cuban movie."
Another co-producer, 34-year-old Inti Herrera, said most Cuban films are made for less than $300,000. He said that the makers of Juan of the Dead are hoping to produce something that has a professional feel to it which can be enjoyed by audiences everywhere — even the United States.
"We really hope it comes out and is shown widely in theaters there," said Brugues. "That is definitely our idea."
Brugues says part of the movie's message deals with whether one should stay and face problems or get out of town when the going gets tough — a politically sensitive topic in a country divided between those who have lived through the revolution for better or worse, and those who have left for exile in South Florida and elsewhere.
But he insists the film is not political. "I want people to have a good time at the theater," Brugues says. "And I promise liters and liters of blood."

In my own defense - wow gold
Maybe God wants us to meet a few wrong people before meeting the right one, so that when we finally meet the person, we will know how to be grateful. And now that they have decided to buy gold, this will doubtlessly rank in history as an inflection point in the dollar-price of gold, and I want to go officially on record as saying so, bxmnbxcfergh with the express purpose being able to say, "I told you so, you stupid little moron, which proves you are a moron and that I am not, hahaha!"
wow gold wow gold
Anyway, I am so excited that I don't even want to take the time to tell you about it, and instead prefer to be left alone with my calculator, giggling and greedy, Scrooge-like, endlessly multiplying the number of ounces of gold in my pathetic stash times prices so high that they seem preposterous, but which, thanks to a bankrupt-yet-spendthrift Congress willing to deficit-spend money without end and a compliant Federal Reserve willing to create money without end, any price I can think of will come true! Hahaha! I love this stuff! For those of you who quickly tire of watching me using a calculator and periodically gloating, "Ooh! Ooh! I'm rich!" let me present Tyler Durden, writing at Zerohedge.com, who sums it up neatly as, "The PBoC has asked the Shanghai Gold Exchange, Shanghai Futures Exchange and commercial banks to become actively engaged in developing a national gold market."
wow gold wow gold
An interesting statistic is that China owns "a mere 1,064 tonnes of gold (sixth in the world and well behind both France and the GLD ETF in terms of holdings)" and which represents a dfygrtjghirftu9-=0-][';/ mere "1.6% of its reserve holdings". The importance is that, as Mr Durden says, "there is only one way to interpret this borderline revolutionary press release. China has now officially entered the gold market."
wow power leveling wow power leveling
It gets even better than that at Bloomberg.com, which had the headline "China Plans to Help Bullion Producers Expand Overseas, Central Bank Says"! Wow! Literally, China is going to provide the financing of expansions of gold, as, "China, the world's largest gold producer, will support overseas investment plans by 'large-scale' bullion companies by backing them financially."
wow power leveling wow power leveling
And rather than suffer the barrage of your questions about it, Bloomberg quickly continues that "Chinese companies spent more than $30 billion last year buying mining assets and oil deposits to help secure raw material supplies to feed the nation's growing economy." Well, I gotta admit that $30 billion seems like chump change to a country that had a trade surplus of over $100 billion last year, which is not to mention the $1 trillion in foreign reserves that the Chinese got after years and years of growing trade surpluses versus America's $700 billion trade deficits. So, wow! Talk about "room to the upside"!

Ed Steer's Gold & Silver Daily looks at this news and says, "Well, it appears that China has publicly come out of the closet regarding its gold market," which I thought was some kind of coded message that I should come out of some kind of closet about something, probably about the shameful way that I cannot stop eating cookies until I have, one by one over a surprisingly short time, consumed the whole bag, no matter how crappy the cookie. In my own defense, you know how I am, so if you left some stupid bag of cookies locked in your stupid desk and then carelessly left it unattended, you have nobody to blame but yourself.
buy wow gold buy wow gold
However, it was, thankfully, not a call for me =p[';/mkfgt7y6tgikdcf to confess to something, so disregard anything I said about any cookies, about which I deny everything. Instead, Mr Steer went on that the Chinese making a public announcement of financing the buying of gold mines and establishing a distributed market for gold through the banks, as astonishing as it is, may be just the tip of the iceberg of China "coming out of the closet" about gold, with the caveat that that we know "at least the part of it that they want us to know about".
Rocky Vega here at The Daily Reckoning adds, "... if China were to suddenly announce a huge increase in its gold reserves it wouldn't be the first nation to do so. Saudi Arabia already set the precedent in late June when it restated gold reserves and revealed it holds about twice as much gold as previously thought."
Not coincidentally, perhaps, the winner of this week's Mogambo Award For Sheer Understatement (MAFSU) goes to Mr Steer, whose winning entry was, "I expect that all this news will be gold positive going forward!" Hahaha! Perfect, and delivered with perfect timing, too! Congratulations, Mr Steer! xll

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran will react swiftly if its commercial shipping or aviation are subjected to inspection, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Sunday. A U.N. Security Council resolution on June 9 imposed restrictions on Iranian shipping and other sectors to try to persuade Tehran to curb its nuclear enrichment activities.
Under the latest sanctions, countries would have the authority to inspect cargo ships heading to or from Iran. "You should know whoever takes a decision against the Iranian nation, such as the so-called inspection of the Iranian ships or so-and-so toward its aircraft, will immediately receive Iran's reaction," told a conference in a speech broadcast live on radio.
Earlier this month, the European Union banned more planes operated by Iran Air from flying into the airspace of the 27-country bloc on safety grounds. It denied reports there was a ban on Iranian commercial airliners refueling in Germany and Britain as a result of U.S. sanctions. However, some oil companies have stopped jet fuel supplies to Iranian aircraft outside Iran.
Restating that the Islamic state did not seek hostility with any country, Ahmadinejad said: "We are in favor of friendship and logic." Iran, the world's fifth largest oil producer, has been the subject of four rounds of U.N. sanctions over its defiance to suspend its uranium enrichment activities.
Iran says its nuclear program is designed to produce electricity and sanctions will not bring about any change

| Large China oil spill threatens sea life, water |
BEIJING (AP) – China's largest reported oil spill emptied beaches along the Yellow Sea as its size doubled yesterday, while cleanup efforts included straw mats and frazzled workers with little more than rubber gloves.
An official warned the spill posed a "severe threat" to sea life and water quality as China's latest environmental crisis spread off the shores of Dalian, once named China's most livable city.
One cleanup worker has drowned, his body coated in crude.
"I've been to a few bays today and discovered they were almost entirely covered with dark oil," said Zhong Yu with environmental group Greenpeace China, who spent the day on a boat inspecting the spill.
"The oil is half-solid and half liquid and is as sticky as asphalt," she told The Associated Press by telephone.
State media has said no more oil is leaking into the sea, but the total amount of oil spilled is not yet clear.
Greenpeace China released photos yesterday of inky beaches and of straw mats about 2 square meters (21 square feet) in size scattered on the sea, meant to absorb the oil.
Fishing in the waters around Dalian has been banned through the end of August, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.
"The oil spill will pose a severe threat to marine animals, and water quality, and the sea birds," Huang Yong, deputy bureau chief for the city's Maritime Safety Administration, told Dragon TV.
At least one person died during cleanup efforts. A 25-year-old firefighter, Zhang Liang, drowned Tuesday when a wave threw him from a vessel, Xinhua reported.
Officials, oil company workers and volunteers were turning out by the hundreds to clean blackened beaches.
"We don't have proper oil cleanup materials, so our workers are wearing rubber gloves and using chopsticks," an official with the Jinshitan Golden Beach Administration Committee told the Beijing Youth Daily newspaper, in apparent exasperation.
"This kind of inefficiency means the oil will keep coming to shore. ... This stretch of oil is really difficult to clean up in the short term."
But 40 oil-skimming boats and about 800 fishing boats were also deployed to clean up the spill, and Xinhua said more than 15 kilometers (9 miles) of oil barriers had been set up to keep the slick from spreading.
China Central Television earlier reported an estimate of 1,500 tons of oil has spilled. That would amount roughly to 400,000 gallons (1,500,000 liters) — as compared with 94 million to 184 million gallons in the BP oil spill off the US coast.
China's State Oceanic Administration released the latest size of the contaminated area in a statement Tuesday.
The cause of the explosion that started the spill was still not clear. The pipeline is owned by China National Petroleum Corp., Asia's biggest oil and gas producer by volume.
Friday's images of 100-foot-high (30-meter-high) flames at China's second largest port for crude oil imports drew the immediate attention of President Hu Jintao and other top leaders. Now the challenge is cleaning up the greasy plume.
"Our priority is to collect the spilled oil within five days to reduce the possibility of contaminating international waters," Dalian's vice mayor, Dai Yulin, told Xinhua on Tuesday.
But an official with the State Oceanic Administration has warned the spill will be difficult to clean up even in twice that amount of time.
Some locals said the area's economy was already hurting.
"Let's wait and see how well they deal with the oil until Sept. 1, if the oil can't be cleaned up by then, the seafood products will all be ruined," an unnamed fisherman told Dragon TV. "No one will buy them in the market because of the smell of the oil."

It is always profitable to go where the trends are. Going green is very strong these days. Cashing in on it is a good idea. Finding other trends would be even better.
Pasay City, Philippines, July 09, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Driven by how the Earth is exhausted from the mismanagement of its resources, the people from Herbana Farms in Calamba, Laguna uphold sustainability through the agroecologic approach to farming, which provides a fuller view of agriculture’s relationships with plants, animals, humans, and the rest of the surrounding environment.
Herbana Farms is a 4-acre ecological organic demonstration farm with a vision to build the “greenprint” for the self-sufficient organic lifestyle of the future, and as such has a two-fold purpose: to produce medicinal and culinary organic crops, and livestock; and to cultivate agroecologic wisdom in the fertile minds of locals who wish to learn the different natural farming technologies like Permaculture, a traditional garden design considered to be the most productive and efficient among gardens.
“Sustainability is the ability to sustain production in perpetuity,” said Gil Carandang, owner and lead farmer of Herbana Farms. “In sustainable agriculture, the focus is the soil, its ability to produce food forever.”
As a full-time farmer and Fulbright scholar, Carandang conducts 6-month apprenticeship programs in Herbana, as well as seminars and workshops on topics including sustainable bio-intensive mini farming, ecological architecture and organic landscaping, and mushroom culture, to name a few. He is also a passionate advocate of using beneficial indigenous microorganisms found in the soil like ginger-garlic fermented extract (a bionutrient and natural antibiotic dietary supplement), banana squash papaya (BSP; a flower-fruit inducer), and the beneficial pest (a natural pesticide plant extract), as tools for farming sustainably.
For Carandang, there is “no other way but to be sustainable. The impact of Ondoy and Pepeng tells us [that]… whether we like it or not, the norm of the future is green.”
Other amenities to be found in Herbana are roofless solar showers made of recycled pine wood and pebbled stone floorings that use solar energy for heating; and the rocket oven, which generates a roaring, rocket-like sound as the heat from burning wood is sucked from a smaller chamber to a bigger one, creating the venturi effect that increases air velocity.
Eco-tourism options are also available that provide such packages as “Own a Farm Over the Weekend”, seasonal garden plot leases, and guided tours.
Herbana Farms is a member of the Organic Producer Trade Association of the Philippines, the Organic Certification Center of the Philippines, as well as the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movement.
More to gain in going green
In August, Herbana Farms will be among green-driven businesses, eco-entrepreneurs, government advocates, industry organizations, and green representatives from the academe, in joining the first Philippine International Eco-Show (PInES) at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. Carandang, a member of the event’s Advisory Board, hopes to enlighten the public on green issues, and consequently pave the way for the trading of green merchandise and services.
“There is the need to adopt natural capitalism as the [future] direction of industries… [as] the green industry is definitely lucrative,” he said. “As we move on to this green philosophy [that is] a paradigm shift of minds, then the industries supporting this philosophy and goal will [also] be in the front run.”
According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the current global eco-market amounts to around 330-410 billion EURO. For 2010, the market is estimated to hit US$50B in Southeast Asia alone.
“Through the Philippine International Eco-Show, we hope to raise awareness and inspire change in the way people treat their environment,” said Thelma Dumpit-Murillo, Deputy Exec. Director of the Consumer Business Department of the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), an attached agency of the Department of Trade and Industry, and main organizer of the event. “We are looking for partners for this project who share the same vision of a greener world.”
BUT WHAT HAS A PIG GOT TO DO WITH nickel and iron?
The Philippines have abundant supply of mineral ore that can produce Pig Iron. It has one of the largest reserves of nickel pig iron in the region.
Obviously, there is none. The pig is an animal while nickel and iron are metal alloys.
A pig is a living thing. Nickel and iron are non-living things. Their only connection could be that they are roasted for some purpose.
Etymology
Nickel pig iron or NPI, as it is called today, is a hot commodity as a source for cheap nickel. It is threatening to reshape the traditional structure of the world’s nickel industry and business.
It is the product of smelting a mineral ore that contain both nickel and iron elements in their natural form. As in iron alloy production, the resulting intermediate product is called a “pig iron.”
The term “pig” came from the shape of the molds that are used. This is corroborated by the black color of the ingots or mass of metal cast that look at that stage like black piglets.
The black ingots branch in the sand forming a structure that lay in right angles to a central channel called runner. “Such a configuration is similar in appearance to a litter of piglets suckling on a sow,” hence, the name “pig” as in pig iron or nickel pig iron.
What it is all about
NPI is a low-cost substitute for traditional refined nickel in the production of stainless steel. It is a low-grade ore produced on a relatively simple low technology.
It is said to have been first made on innovated technology in China in 2005. In 2007, when world nickel prices hit a high of $24 a pound, it was produced in large quantities.
It is said to consist of only 4-15 percent nickel but it comes along with iron, which is also important in producing stainless steel, for free.
The ore used to produce NPI contains less than 2 percent nickel. It is unsuitable for traditional nickel production that begins with higher-grade ore with nickel content of more than 2 percent.
As such, it does not entail the cost of building a traditional nickel mine, smelter and refinery that are massive compared to the cost of building an NPI factory.
NPI is a booming product used in the production of stainless steel. China is the lead producer of NPI, supplying about 10 percent of the world’s nickel requirement.
Based on the three essential factors that make up NPI production profitable, the supply of cheap low-grade ore to support its additional production requirement comes from the Philippines or Indonesia.
Bottom line spin
So, what is the fuss on NPI as far as we are concerned? What has it got to do with us?
First, NPI is a revolutionary product that may challenge the traditional demand for refined nickel. Because they are cheap, they may also put a cap on the price of refined nickel that will enable smaller producers of refined nickel to grow in numbers and flourish.
If it will not, it is expected to somehow drive the play on nickel production investments to countries otherwise disregarded by traditional producers of refined nickel before because of their low grade ore reserve.
This brings us to the second point: The Philippines, like I stated before is that the Philippines have an abundance of Pig Iron.
Third, Chinese NPI producers are importing their additional ore requirement for NPI from Indonesia and the Philippines.
Fourth, the worldwide market for NPI is booming. It is hitting hard on the nickel market that is now worth about $21 billion a year.
China is imposing a steep export duty on NPI. This makes the cost to ship the product outside of China prohibitive. To avoid the export duty, some Chinese companies are planning to build NPI plants in the Philippines and/or Indonesia. The Jiangsu Mingzhu is among those reported to be planning to invest in a plant in the Philippines soon.
Fifth, of the local companies that could readily take advantage of producing NPI, only publicly listed TKC Steel Corp. has the necessary facility to undertake the operation.
Based on its smelting facility, it can produce NPI as both a parallel or alternative product—a direction which TKC Steel management is in better position to say.
HeyWhatEverTV producer Kevin ROCK Reiss welcomes special guest Nehemiah Reiss to the set of "The Founders Show"
It's been a turbulent year for the global economy and the events of recent weeks only underscore the urgency of our situation as a society and as a planet. We see firsthand the severe damage oil can inflict, not only on our global economy but also on our environment.
Just look at the tragedy unfolding in the Gulf of Mexico. We will soon see the damage of this horrific event in very human terms, as the damage to the industry, the environment and the livelihood of those in the Gulf grows and all struggle to recover in the coming months and years.
My hope is that we will soon get to a point where we see that the cost of oil in human capital is no longer acceptable and that the increasing complexity of finding and retrieving this diminishing resource no longer makes economic sense. The good news is we are already seeing a shift that will ultimately take us from a transportation system based on a volatile oil ecosystem to one based on a more sustainable model based on electric cars that creates a market for clean energy.
The shift to electrification is inevitable and we're seeing some of the world's leading countries make strong commitments to electrification. China, France, Japan and Israel are just a few. Motivations vary from country to country, but the end result will be the same: a stronger economy, healthier automotive sector and increased development of clean energy, leading to a healthier society.
We will see new countries emerge to lead the way, and we will see former powerhouses who fail to act, left behind in this new sustainable global economy. While governments have the ability to accelerate the shift, the question remains how quickly we can get there.
My start-up, Better Place, has made great progress in the past 12 months, and we're moving forward in all of our committed markets. We began the year by raising $350 million in a financing round led by HSBC, and we continue to drive toward a full system test in Israel later this year, followed by our commercial launches in Israel and Denmark in late 2011.
On April 26th of this year, we launched the first switchable-battery, electric-taxi project in Tokyo. With the support of the Japanese government, we've partnered with Nihon Kotsu, Tokyo's largest taxi operator, to show what's possible in a rigorous environment with cars that drive almost continuously. Tokyo has much to gain from this: The city's 60,000 taxis may only represent 2 percent of all cars in the city, but they are responsible for 20 percent of emissions. If the switch works for taxis, imagine how it can work for average drivers.
Just two days before our Tokyo launch, Better Place signed a memorandum of understanding with Chery Automobile Co., China's largest independent auto producer and exporter. You can't talk about the future without considering China: They get it, they'll do it and it's that simple.
Today only 2 percent of China's population owns a car, but 80 percent of sales last year came from first-time car buyers, presenting a huge opportunity to get it right. The Chinese recognize EVs as a solution to the problem of the oil monopoly and its associated pollution, as well as an opportunity to leapfrog internal-combustion-engine technology and the rest of the auto industry. In fact, recent research from HSBC predicts that China's share of the global EV market will grow from 2.7 percent this year to 35 percent by 2020.
In late 2011, we're planning countrywide rollouts of the Better Place model in Israel and Denmark. With the infrastructure deployment under way, both of these countries will be ready when the first EVs from Renault come to market. We are talking about mass market with these cars -- as Better Place and Renault have committed to 100,000 electric cars for Israel and Denmark beginning in 2011. This is just the beginning, and we're seeing clear direction and new visionaries emerge such as Carlos Ghosn, CEO of Renault Nissan, who sees a future where EVs are mass marketed and make up 10 percent of all car sales by 2020.
Call it a revolution or an evolution, but this shift is happening today. While we still face a number of challenges, over the past 12 months we've seen a new willingness from the global auto industry to change. Two years ago, electric cars were considered a niche market by most automakers, but today we see almost every automaker in the world producing electric vehicles.
As the benefits of a more sustainable transportation model are realized, we will very quickly see a dramatic change in the global economy, the health of the car industry and most importantly in the air we breathe. All of this pointing the way to bigger, brighter future. It's simply up to us to make it happen
I like how creative this writer and producer is. Unpredictable in many ways.

A Taste of Central & Latin American Flair: Milwaukee Artbeat Celebrates One Year!
Milwaukee Artbeat has been working since April, 2009 to build awareness for local artists, to bring arts programs to the area’s youth most in need, and to share with our community the rich arts scene we enjoy here in Milwaukee!
Unique Milwaukee Artbeat shows raise funds for arts programs, working with organizations including Express Yourself Milwaukee, and the YWCA of Racine. 2010 marks the first year for Artbeat to implement its own specialized arts programs at local schools & other community centers, partnering with local artists to provide schools and students these programs at no cost. The organization highlights the relationship between involvement in the arts and better grades in school as well as higher measures of creative thinking across all socioeconomic levels.
April marks Milwaukee Artbeat's One Year Anniversary, and the celebration features a plethora of noteworthy artists from the area, including members of Brazilian martial arts and culture group Capoeira Nagô Milwaukee, Jamaican reggae singer/rapper JD Rankin of local favorites King Solomon, award-winning spoken word artist Joshua the Scribe, mosaic artist Shelly Bird, award-winning recording artist Ronnie Nyles, as well as the Artbeat Gallery, featuring several visual artists. Featured artists are interviewed during a 2-hour show, and audience members experience their visual or performance art first-hand! There will also be a raffle, and be sure to bring an extra pair of comfortable shoes to enjoy a half-hour SALSA LESSON given by Christine Almeida at 7pm! Please visit the Artbeat website: www.MilwaukeeArtbeat.org for information on Brazilian visual artists to be added to the Artbeat Gallery.
Artbeat producer and local singer/songwriter Annie B. hosts the show along with Lisa Blythe of Lisaslist.org. “I am so honored to be co-hosting with Annie B for the 1-year Anniversary of Milwaukee Art Beat. It is great being involved with an organization that helps promote and showcase our local artists!” Lisa states.
The Milwaukee Artbeat One Year Anniversary Show is on Friday, April 30th at the Hide House, 2625 S. Greeley St., Milwaukee, WI 53207. Doors are at 6:30pm, and an $8 donation is appreciated, and includes complimentary appetizers as well as all the evening's exciting activities!
“I was immersed in marvelous talent last Friday at Milwaukee Artbeat. There was art in various scintillating forms including photography, sculpture, mosaics, painting, and even performance art. It was quite the experience. In some cases, we were able to hear directly from the artist in on-stage interviews, receiving an in-depth look into their work.” - Shavanna Pinder, Designer and Artbeater
"The rest of the country is always wondering, 'Where is the next big "scene"?' Milwaukee always makes the lists, somewhere behind Seattle, Atlanta, or Austin. We don't really care because we know Milwaukee has truly great talent. People leave for the coasts and the majority return because Milltown is real, significant, influential, supportive, and we know how to party! Artbeat will solidify this, and bring well-deserved exposure to this great artistic cauldron. We are used to working without national attention because no one thinks you can be a fabulous artist AND live in Milwaukee. Artbeat is setting the record straight, we are grateful that Annie's willing to have our backs, putting us out there. We're great artists because we live in Milwaukee. It is cold though, I'll give ya that!" -Alisa Strautmanis, Artbeat Artist
Local & regional artists interested in submitting for future ARTBEAT shows may e-mail AnnieBBaby@gmail.com with their links and/or jpegs! Information and applications for after-school and other youth arts programs will soon be available at www.MilwaukeeArtbeat.org.

Blogging 'Til I Win A Grammy - Day 1
Day 1 (actually, Day 2)
Ok, it's actually Day 5706 on my way to winning a Grammy... which is one of my 5 major career goals. I promise to post blogs here until I win a Grammy, and when I do win a Grammy, YOU can say you followed me all the way there! I will hopefully keep blogging here even after I win that Grammy, but I am now obligated to blog here until I do win one. I have made a public statement, and I will come through. So, like I said, it's probably more like Day 5706 (somewhere between 15 & 16 years) since I wrote my first song that I actually kept and recorded, and considered myself to be a bona fide artist... (That song was called "Follow Your Heart," and I wrote it in the summer of 1993. I could probably still sing & play that song today if I needed to. I have since written well over 300 songs. Some of 'em are pretty good, some are great, and some are not so good and you will never, ever hear them.) That's when it all began, when I first started dreaming of winning a Grammy, and having my other 4 career goals. Those would be (1) hearing my songs randomly on the radio, (2) headlining for an audience of 10,000 or more, (3) going on a world tour with a real tour bus and real riders and hotel rooms and all that stuff, (4) I actually forgot the other one, but I will let you know if I remember what it is. Those first few are the best indicators that I've "made it," I guess you could say. I have actually toured the U.S., but it was in my car and most nights I did not know where I would end up crashing. I crashed in my car a lot that year. Perhaps I have already "made it," since I only play music for a living. Isn't that reason enough to celebrate??? I also get some hosting gigs, but that's also being in the spotlight, so it kind of counts. (Sorry about the narcissism/need for attention. Maybe I didn't get enough attention as a kid, being 5th out of 6?) Anyhoo, so I'll call this Day 1, since it's Day 1 of Blogging 'Til I Win A Gammy. Even though it's really Day 2, since I'd like my "start date" to be March 1. That will make my life easier... to have Day 1 on the first day of the month. So I'll be writing about the things I am doing to "make it." The little tasks I perform every day or every week, what I am doing to get bigger and better gigs, other things I am doing to move my career forward towards that Grammy and my 4 (today it's only 3) other goals. It's kind of like getting a chance to be behind the scenes and say "I knew her when..." in case I really do make it to the "Big Time." Wait a minute! "In case"???? Nope. That stops right here. Half the way to success is attitude and believing in yourself. Actually, it's more than half. So, WHEN I make it to the big time, you can say you knew me when I was on Day 1 of my Blogging 'Til I Win A Grammy"!!! How fun would that be???? OK, so let's get started... What did I do today? Well, I slept at a friend's place last night (still trying to decide if this guy is my boyfriend... ??????) and he had to be at work at 6:15 so I was up at 5:50 and home by 6:30am which is very unlike me. I did get a lot accomplished today and that's because I got a huge jump-start on the day. I helped shovel snow and had a great breakfast (like I do every morning... not the shoveling part, the breakfast part!!!) Had to be at a producer friend's house to edit a promo for www.milwaukeeartbeat.com - Milwaukee Artbeat is a new artist showcase I am producing and hosting. Fun stuff. Please visit the website for more info. Got done editing around 2pm but then I got a call from the place where my parents live regarding my pop. He's got dementia and that can lead to aggressive behavior for some. Oddly enough, the video producer I am working with (www.xfactafilms.com) is also a social worker so he knows all about it... we talked about stuff for almost an hour. Then I headed over to Bukalou, our web people for Milwaukee Artbeat, so they could upload the video. Hopefully they'll be able to do that tomorrow or sometime this week. Send me an e-mail when you see our trailer up at www.milwaukeeartbeat.com, will ya? Got home around 4 and sent out a few e-mails. I am trying to get 88.9 and the local arts/entertainment papers to sponsor Milwaukee Artbeat so I left a few phone messages, too. Ate a turkey sandwich. An exciting day so far! Also waiting on word from the House of Bricks in Des Moines to see if I can open for G.B. Leighton when he comes through. I know, Des Moines is 5 hours away, but I am headed down to L.A. for a Shut Up Marie reunion show at the end of April, so I'm trying to make that part of my trip down. Went to the bank, they let me sneak in right as they were closing. E-mails, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Last.fm, and Eventful came next. How can people keep up with all the online networks you have to do these days? Bugsy and I agree - it's a 40-hour a week job!!! And guess what....... now I have ANOTHER thing to do online... my "Blogging 'Til I Win A Grammy" blog!!!!!!!!! Next up will be laundry (that's a break for me - most of the evening I am at my computer). Then I need to create a cool loop for the trailer. We're trying to fix the audio on the trailer, and that's my opportunity to put in a different loop for the background music. I enjoy that stuff... actually doing MUSIC instead of promotion, e-mailing, press kits, and all that jazz. Last thing is to make my "to do" list for tomorrow, and I'm trying to read a little from "The Prophet" before I hit the hay these nights. UGH!!!! I forgot to get a Thank You card for Nick at Sunny 97.7 in Fond du Lac!!! He interviewed me on the station last Thursday morning. Thanks, Nick!!!!!!!! Have a great night. See you again in a day or two!!!!!!!! |
