HeyBraatz, 1 year ago | FlagI feel very greatful that I and my 4 yr old son (the little soft voice in the background) were present during Kevin Rock Reiss's drug and alchohol use educational presentation at Plymouth High School. His purpose was to educate the students that drug use will create PAIN in their lives and the lives of those they know.
When Kevin informed me that he was going to speak to these students and what his purpose was I felt compelled as a parent to bring my son to hear him. Now a 4 yr old may not understand all of the message, but I did have a conversation with him, concerning making decisions that WILL HURT HIM, ME AND THOSE HE LOVES IF HE DOES DRUGS. Drugs cause damage to the body and mind and put people in harms way, I told him.
Kevin did not mince words when he shared his personal experiences with drug use. "I was arrested 17 times before the age of 18." He said. His message was clear that often times those who use drugs have been victims of abuse, but DRUG USE in any amount and form was the wrong decision in dealing with abuse. He spoke to the students that when they have been abused the best decision is to TELL SOMEONE THEY TRUST and get HELP!
Since being completely drug free for over 20yrs, Kevin's mission in life is to be a POSITIVE ROLE MODEL to others and to mirror his Savor, Jesus Christ, to serve others. He has spent countless hours and resources to create over 20 companies, the HEYwhateverconcept to reach out to the masses to accomplish this mission.
He provided the students with the name of his website (a superportal with positive messages) along with a toll free number that he encouraged the students to take advantage of at anytime DAY OR NIGHT. He is also in the process of writing a book in order to reach out to even more people.
I'm very proud of Kevin for educating students about the PAIN of drug use and the alternatives available.
As I reflect on how Kevin affected me, I'm reminded of how I was a victim and the choices I made to cope, some good and some bad, and how having a positive role model, like Kevin, could have influenced my decisions. Also I noticed how receptive the students were and appreciative the students and staff were that Kevin was honest and spoke from his heart to HELP THEM.
