Artbeat October 09, 2009
8:00 PM Saturday found HeyWhatEver at the Hide House, in Milwaukee WI, a renovated tannery turned art studio, church, you name it! The Idea is if the space is available, use it!
You miss a great deal if resist the opportunity to appreciate the ambiance created by the complete over hall of the building. If you have any understanding of the hide tanning industry you know what it looked like before its conversion. If not let me take this opportunity to explain: just be happy we were on a floor that appeared to be part of the finishing department, and not what is affectionately called the "Wet House", hides went through an acid bath to remove the hair, and it is quite possible that this facility did what was needed to provide the freshest hides possible.
What was done to the building is as much a work of art as anything touched by the evening. Cleaned up, sanded, washed and refinished the Hide House shines. The atmosphere is warmed again by the wood tones and cream city brick throughout the establishment, the attention to detail speaks volumes to the artistic achievements being undertaken inside. Walls and floors covered with varied inner disciplines revealed by individual talents, only added to the beauty already residing at the Hide House.
Annie B & her band Shut up Marie opened the show to get the crowd fired up! It worked, coming up with an idea to have artist's perform as the public watches, is sure to catch on!! Annie has opened the door in Milwaukee, to a new dating or "nite out" experience allowing people from all walks of life to rub shoulders in a atmosphere creativity, imagination and fantasy. WELL DONE, Pat yourself on the back Annie!!
Artbeat gave the community, a rare peak into the hearts(the Creative Center) of artists everywhere, from the disturbing to sublime, art touches each of us in its own unique way. From Friends and family to sculpture, Painting to Retro Cinema, you never know what to expect. This is one of those ideas that disqualifies spontaneity but really doesn't, Let me explain! Having the inside track on who is performing only tells you what they do. To fully understand you have to be there!!
Spoken Word artist & poet Aaron Lundquist enthralled us all with his emphatic, emotional spoken performances as well as a photographic display of his work in clay. The imagery provided, through word or media, simply was truly moving, all that was left for you to do was decide the direction! If your disinclined to take my word for it, I completely understand! Find out for your self, connect with Aaron via the Internet by going to www.myspace.com/alundquist. It will be well worth the CLICK!
Steve Daubs author and photographer, dazzled the audiences eye's by allowing us the privilege of seeing Russia's people and the surrounding areas through his eyes. It would appear that possibly the biggest assets to being a great photographer is having a knack of being in the right place at the right time. Steve proved this accurate as hearts were touched and emotions stirred time and again as each new picture came on screen.
It would appear, artistic ability enjoys sharing and is not tight fist-ed, so it shouldn't be any surprise to anyone as to the several talents that manifest themselves in individuals. Steve Daubs is NO exception, although, he is an interesting combination, Steve will never run short of work, even if the old adage appears to contradict itself in him, there is no struggle to be seen. So, If a picture is worth a thousand words, Steve talent for writing is an additional benefit to all of us!
The audience was treated to a slapstick comedy routine/silent movie scenario not once, but twice. The M.U.T.E.S a Comedic silent acting troupe, showed us the valve of expression and communication, using nothing but body language and facial expression, and maybe a few props. This group of four very talented individuals can be found at www.themutes.com! They are silent, so you don't have to be, so if your looking to release some of that pent up energy they provide all the ingredients for a good laugh or a needed cry. That choice can be made by visiting them online just click the link above.
Impressionistic painter and performance artist Shelby Keefe, kept the audience on the edge of their seats awaiting the finished product, being produced to the sounds burst forth from the musician within her. Never before has tapping a toe to a soul gripping beat assisted in the creation of a painting. Shelby has knack for capturing the uniqueness and emotion in every day events. Inspired by pictures of her choosing, and if I am not mistaken her taking, decisions to paint are a result of the impact that was made on her. Whether it be the way the sun strikes a building or some other emotion inspiring attribute of the picture, Shelby obviously enjoys what she does, and has found a masterful way of translating that to canvas, through oil paint.
I don't know where she sees her music taking her, but it would definitely be worthwhile to keep a close eye on Shelby. This can be done on line by clicking www.studioshelby.com!
Not that there aren't enough unique opportunities to appreciate art at these events, more present themselves provided by the atmosphere of networking in the air!!
To close the show, Annie B and Nick Ramsey brought Jeremy Scott, renowned Saxophonist/Pianist and lyricist to the stage. In a non scripted event such as this, humor as a way of showing up and no one can possibly know who its going to victimize. Jeremy "WOWED" the audience with his exceptional ability and showmanship. By the end of his first set he was not the only breathless person in the room. Allowing Jeremy to catch his breath provided everyone in the room with an excellent example of why all production notes should typewritten. With Annie B curiously looking at Nick, a question was asked, that lightened an already happy situation.
We'll leave it to your own imagination the type of fun that can be had when the question is asked: What was your most embarrassing moment in Sax? Doesn't have the privilege of being read correctly! Intermission asides, back to the action, Jeremy Scott, proved with out question that he was more than just a musician, his work as a writer is stellar and very inspiring. Find out more about him www.myspace.com/jeremyscottandhighergroove.
Stay tuned to Artbeat, for more information about the upcoming event in February!!! Til' then Keep the Beat!!

Annie has appeared on MTV , she's hosted various shows/ event in Southern CA and throught the U.S..and has traveled the country as a singer/ soungwriter. Shortly after her move in 2007 to Auston, Texas, a family situation brought her back to her hometown in early 2008. and she has never been happier. "I've found Wisconsin to be one of those kept secrets... truly a great place for artists. it allows us to breathe, without the pressure and competition of a place like L.A., or even Austin. Ant the support for artists around here is refreshingly genuine." Her inspiration for Artbeat grew from a desire to showcase the many great artist she discovered while on the road, as well as her hope to bring the arts to youth, stressing the importance of self-expression as a means towards well-being. in the meantime, Annie continued to reach out to fans all over Wisconcin with her music and her alternative band.
